About Dallas, OR
Dallas, Oregon is a vibrant city situated in Polk County. As of the 2020 census, Dallas was home to 16,854 people – and it just keeps growing! Located near Salem with an elevation of 325 feet above sea level along Rickreall Creek, the town forms part of the greater Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Dallas began as a small settlement located north of Rickreall Creek in the 1840s, formerly known by its settlers as “Cynthian” or “Cynthiana”. The town was eventually named after Cynthiana, Kentucky at the suggestion of Mrs. Thomas J. Lovelady according to an item from 1947 and later confirmed by Polk County Historical Society records from 1987. However it’s possible that earlier settler Cynthia Ann Applegate – wife of Jesse Applegate in Salt Creek – may have been responsible for naming this pioneering community before her absence listed on 1850 Federal Census results.
